Hair and Nails

Through her initial training with Dr David De Berker, Anita gained an interest in hair and nail conditions that she has since developed.  

She has gained an international perspective on her work through her sabbatical with Professor Rodney Sinclair (Melbourne) and Professor Bertrand Richert (Brussels) and her attendance at specialised conferences - such as the International Summit on Nail Diseases in Greece, the World Congresses for Hair Research in Japan and in Barcelona. 

She is also involved in education and research, having been an invited speaker for multiple local, regional, and national educational meetings. In addition, she hosted the inaugural National Nail Education day. She has been a reviewer for hair and nail papers and published articles in peer reviewed journals and published chapters in several textbooks.

Skin Cancer Surgery

Anita has a specialism in skin cancer surgery, having done a surgical fellowship in Cardiff. After eight years as skin cancer lead for the Trust and chairperson of the 3 Counties Skin Cancer Network, Anita became the Trust’s dermatology surgery lead, followed by her current position, Clinical Lead for the GRH Dermatology Department.

Within surgery, Anita excises skin cancer and then uses different techniques - including flaps and grafts - to repair the skin. Anita has operated for the last ten years, gaining significant experience and expertise. She has utilised this on a weekly basis to write a chapter in Brennan's Maxillo Facial Surgery.

National Roles

Dr Takwale has been a leader on the national stage.

• President, British Hair and Nail Society (BHNS) : 2019- 2023
• Clinical Lead for Hair and Nails, BNHS: 2017-2019
• Created the National Photography Guidelines for hair loss.
• Lead Organiser of Nail Meetings (the inaugural and subsequent National Nail Meetings in Cheltenham, the inaugural training event for specialist registrars in hair and nail, and BHNS sessions at the British Association of Dermatology (BAD) annual meeting for last 4 years)
• Written 30 publications and written chapters in 4 books including 10th edition- Rook; Dermatology book for trainees and two curricula for PG diplomas (Cardiff and Barts London).
• Been an invited speaker at 45 events at regional /national/international meetings, highlights of which include the Annual Dermatology Consultant course; the Royal Society of Medicine, London; World Trichology congress with FACE, London; European Hair research society meeting, Madrid.
• A member of the BAD Alopecia Areata National Guideline Group, European Hair Taskforce, International Advisory Board for the Indian Journal of Dermatology Venereology and Leprosy (IJDVL).
